Trends in Spending in America

The current amount of wealth women control is $14 trillion. Consumer spending by women is $3.7 trillion and business spending is $1.5 trillion. There is a significant amount of market share, commanded primarily on the female consumer:

  • Women purchase 83% of all products and services.

  • Women directly purchase or influence the purchase of 91% of all new homes.

  • Women account for 88% of retail customers in the United States.

  • Auto: Women make more than 50% of all auto purchases and influence 85%. The Figure can be upwards to 60% and 90%, respectively, depending on the auto company and the source.

  • Bank accounts: 89% .

  • Beauty and hygiene: Women are purchasing more than 90%.

  • Clothes, accessories: Women wear more than 90% of items such as jewelry and perfume.

  • Consumer Electronics: 51%.

  • Health: 65% of herbal remedies, vitamins and minerals and 80% of all healthcare .

  • Home furnishings: 94%.

  • Home Improvement: More than 55% .

  • Internet and e-mail: Women reached more than 50% of the Internet use by 2000 and spend far more time on e-mail than men. The latest estimates are as high as 60% of the Internet use is by women with 83% considered to be the primary decision maker for e-commerce.

  • Meetings: Women plan the meetings and comprise the majority of certified meeting planners.

  • Office Supplies: $44.5 billion.

  • Recording Industry: 51.4% .

  • Lawn Mowers: Women purchase approximately 81% of riding lawn mowers.

  • Home computer: Women account for 66% of all home-computer purchases.

  • Health-care services: Women make 80% of health care decisions.

  • Credit cards: Women carry 76 million credit cards, 8 million than men. (Fast Company, 2004).

  • Vehicles: Women purchase about two-thirds of vehicles and influence 80% of all sales. (Business Week, 2004).
